Jewellery Cleaning Guide - How to clean jewellery

How To Care For Your Jewellery

Now you've found your perfect jewellery, give it some TLC with our range of cleaning products!

General Tips

When it comes to looking after jewellery, we follow the mantra:
"Make it the last thing you put on, and the first thing you take off"

  • Always put your jewellery on AFTER perfume, hairspray, fake tan & make up.
  • Try your best to keep your special jewellery pieces in a cloth bag away from air exposure, as this can help jewellery tarnish faster.
  • Don't wear your jewellery in the shower, when doing washing up, or exercising.
  • Treat your jewellery well, and it will make you feel like a VIP!

Sterling Silver Products

Sterling silver is a great material to use for jewellery making, we love it so much we even named our business after it! Made with 92.5% sterling silver, the other 7.5% is created with a mixture of other metals, including copper.

Anything from our exclusive Argento range is crafted with sterling silver at its base. If you're in doubt as to whether your jewellery is sterling silver, look out for the 925 logo. This should be stamped on any jewellery crafted with the material.

It is perfectly natural for sterling silver jewellery to tarnish or become dull.

To bring your jewellery back to life, a silver cleaning cloth can be used as a simple and cost-effective way to make your jewellery dazzle.

Pandora

One of our most loved brands, Pandora have their own cleaning cloth specially made for the different materials they use. This cloth can be used to clean all your Pandora jewellery including all sterling silver, Pandora Shine & Pandora Rose products.

Use the white side, containing a gentle chemical solution for precious metals, including sterling silver and 14K gold.

Use the pink side, containing no chemicals for Pandora Rose, Pandora Shine, and any other plated pieces.

Nomination

As you may know, Nomination's bestselling composable charm collection all have a stainless-steel base.

Stainless steel is popular for use in jewellery products as it won't tarnish the same way sterling silver does, as well as this it is a hypoallergenic material.

Though it may not tarnish the same way as silver does, you may find you need to clean your bracelet from time to time - especially in between the links on your bracelet!

This polishing cloth can also be used on Nomination jewellery with a sterling silver base - making it an ideal accessory for any Nomination fan!

Swarovski

No one does sparkle quite like Swarovski! To keep your pieces gleaming for as long as possible, Swarovski now sell two cleaning cloths - one for rhodium-based products, and one for gold-based products.

As Swarovski products are crafted without sterling silver, we recommend you use the below cloths, rather than a traditional silver cleaning cloth.

You can also use an old toothbrush and some warm water to clean around the Swarovski crystals found in the products - just be careful not to use too much water, and dry your jewellery as quickly as possible.

Gemstones & Crystals

Here at Argento, we sell a vast range of crystals, gemstones and faux stones.

Sometimes these can lose their sparkle, or you may find dirt building up around them.

To keep your products gleaming we are pleased to announce we now stock Connoisseurs - truly Connoisseurs when it comes to cleaning jewellery!

The unique pen brush found in the Dazzle Stick is specially designed to clean your jewellery, especially in between and behind crystals, stones and diamonds - simply twist, brush and dazzle!

Connoisseurs jewellery beauty wipes are great for giving all your jewellery some TLC. These dry wipes are suitable for cleaning silver, gold, platinum and steel jewellery - can also be used on diamonds and other stones!

Watches

Costing slightly more than some jewellery pieces, watches can often be an investment piece

Due to this, it's important you treat your watches with respect, so they keep going until the end of time!

When purchasing a leather strap watch, we recommend applying a leather protector spray before wear.
Currently, we do not stock these - but everywhere from your local supermarket to discount retailer should!

Prepare the watch before applying by covering any buckles, or metal components with tape - these could become tarnished by the cleaning spray.

Rather than spraying directly on the watch strap, we recommend applying to a cotton bud first, and gently rubbing this on the leather strap.

Allow to dry before wearing.

Depending on how often you wear your leather strap watch, it may be beneficial to reapply every so often.

If you have a stainless-steel watch that's starting to show some wear and tear - don't worry! A few simple steps should have your timepiece gleaming again.

You will need:

  • A soft bristle toothbrush
  • Warm, soapy water
  • A towel

Submerge the toothbrush into warm soapy water, just be careful not to use too much!

Gently clean the watch, especially in between any links.

Dry the watch quickly with a towel.

We recommend Connoisseur’s watch cleaning cloth, to give your timepiece some TLC!

This double-sided cloth features an anti-tarnish shield and is suitable for: gold, silver, platinum, stainless steel, plastic, glass, ceramic, acrylic and crystal.

Use the white side of the cloth to remove dirt from your bracelet strap, case and crystals. Use the dark side to polish your watch for a dazzling finish!

Costume Jewellery

At Argento, we stock a lot of costume jewellery, providing you with statement worthy pieces that help you look a million dollars!

Costume jewellery tends to be made with materials such as brass and can be very susceptible to tarnishing.

When wearing costume jewellery please remember not to wear before applying perfume, fake tan or hairspray. Do not get your costume jewellery wet, do not wear while cleaning. You should be especially careful with costume rings - always remove before washing your hands.

To clean costume jewellery you will need the below products:

  • A soft bristle toothbrush
  • Warm, soapy water
  • A towel

Submerge the toothbrush into the warm soapy water - don't use too much water!

Gently clean the jewellery, taking special care around any crystals.

Dry the jewellery quickly with a towel.

To maximise the lifespan of your costume jewellery, we recommend storing in a cloth bag, away from direct sunlight.
